Southside Cocktail

One of my favorite gin cocktail recipes. Classic, delicious, and refreshing. The Southside Cocktail is a prohibition era cocktail, when mint and sugar became more widely used to mask the harsh taste of “bathtub” gin. Here, the triple threat of mint, lime and sugar are deployed for a cocktail that tastes good to this day.

Recipe:

To make simple syrup, mix together equal parts sugar and water. Bring water to a boil to dissolve the sugar. Let cool.

3 mint sprigs
2 ounces gin
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice,
3/4 ounce simple syrup
1 dash Angostura bitters (optional)

Directions:

Genty muddle two sprigs of the mint in a cocktail shaker. Add ingredients. Add ice. Shake. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with reserved mint leaf.
